Animal Welfare Policy

Last updated:

Every animal at Paaltu Jaanwar is a living being, not merchandise. This Policy explains the standards we hold ourselves to and what we ask of families.

1. Our principles

  • An animal’s welfare comes before a sale.
  • Families should meet an animal in person before bringing it home.
  • Health information should be honest and backed by records.
  • Young animals should not leave their mothers too early.
  • A pet should go to a home that understands the commitment.

2. Our care standards

We aim to give every animal in our care clean housing, shade and ventilation suited to Karachi’s heat, fresh food and water, room to move, vaccination and deworming suited to its age, veterinary treatment when ill, and gentle handling.

3. What we do not sell

  • Wildlife and protected species without the permits the law requires, and any wild-caught bird, mammal or reptile;
  • Puppies and kittens under about 8 weeks old;
  • Animals for fighting;
  • Dyed animals, or animals with cosmetic mutilation such as ear cropping or tail docking without a medical reason;
  • Animals whose origin cannot be reasonably explained;
  • Live animals as gifts or prizes in promotions.

4. The law

Keepers and sellers of animals in Karachi should be aware of the following, among other laws:

  • The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1890 makes acts of cruelty, such as beating, overloading or causing needless suffering, an offence.
  • The Sindh Wildlife Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Management Act 2020 restricts hunting, trapping, possessing and trading in wildlife without the required permission.
  • The Pakistan Trade Control of Wild Fauna and Flora Act 2012 governs international trade in species protected under CITES.

This summary is for general awareness and is not legal advice. If you are unsure whether a species is allowed, ask the Sindh Wildlife Department before you buy or keep it.

5. What we ask of families

Before bringing a pet home, consider its full life: daily care, diet, vet bills, summer heat, grooming, exercise and who will care for it when you travel. Please never abandon a pet. If your circumstances change, talk to us or to a shelter or rescue organisation.

6. Heat safety in Karachi

Heat can kill. Never leave an animal in a parked car. Provide shade and fresh water at all times, walk dogs in the early morning or evening, and take special care with short-nosed breeds, such as Persian cats and French bulldogs. Seek a vet immediately if an animal shows heavy panting, drooling, weakness or collapse.

7. How to raise a concern

If anything about an animal at our shop or on our Website worries you, tell us with the listing ID, what you saw and any photographs:

We review every report. You may also report suspected wildlife offences directly to the Sindh Wildlife Department. If an animal is in immediate danger, please contact a local vet, rescue organisation or the police without waiting for our reply.
