Bringing a puppy home in Karachi: your first-week checklist

What to prepare, what to buy, and how to keep a new puppy calm, fed and cool in its first week in a Karachi home.

The first week with a new puppy sets the tone for years. A little preparation makes it calmer for you and much less stressful for the puppy. Here is the checklist we share with families who bring a puppy home from Paaltu Jaanwar.

Before the puppy comes home

  • Meet the puppy first. See how it moves, eats and plays. If you can, meet the mother too.
  • Ask for the paperwork. The vaccination card, deworming dates and the date of birth.
  • Ask what it eats today. Note the exact food and how many meals a day.
  • Puppy-proof one room. Hide wires and slippers, block balcony gaps and keep cleaning products out of reach.

Your first shopping list

  • Two steel bowls, one for food and one for water.
  • The same food the puppy eats now, enough for two weeks. Puppy food can wait until it has settled.
  • A washable bed or crate, placed in a quiet corner.
  • A soft collar, an ID tag with your number, and a lead.
  • Two or three chew toys, so it chews those instead of your furniture. See toys.

Food: change nothing for now

A new home is already a big change. Keep the same food for the first week, then mix in the new food slowly over seven to ten days. Young puppies do better with small, regular meals than with one or two big ones. Fresh water should always be within reach.

Vaccines and the first vet visit

Book a vet visit in the first week, even if the puppy seems perfectly well. Take the vaccination card with you. Your vet will tell you which vaccines are still due and when. Until the vet says the course is complete, keep the puppy off streets and parks where unknown dogs walk.

Karachi heat: keeping your puppy cool

  • Walk early in the morning or after sunset, never in the afternoon sun.
  • Feel the ground with your hand. If it is too hot for your palm, it is too hot for paws.
  • Keep water and shade available all day, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
  • Thick-coated breeds such as the Golden Retriever need extra care in humid months.

The first nights

Some crying at night is normal. Put the bed near you for the first few nights and keep a simple routine: toilet, a short play, then sleep. For toilet training, take the puppy out after every meal, nap and play session, and praise it the moment it gets it right.

When to call the vet straight away

Call your vet the same day if the puppy stops eating, has vomiting or diarrhoea that lasts more than a day, seems unusually weak, or struggles to breathe. With puppies it is always better to ask early.

Engage in familiar routines. Whether waking up early, waiting for dinner time, or hanging out in the courtyard: there are daily activities that mark the flow of your pet’s day. Try to match those habits as closely as you can so your companion understands that their home is safe and welcoming.

We show care to our pets on a daily basis, and keeping up gentle attention helps fight any restlessness your pet may be feeling while giving them positive associations with their space. Being able to focus on a favourite chew or interactive game will calm their nerves and keep them happy.

Moving or adjusting to a new routine is a big event for humans and animals alike, so your pet will appreciate every effort you make to help them settle in. Be sure to continue paying attention to any changes in their mood or appetite, as this may indicate your pet needs extra care or a quick check-in with your veterinarian.

Common questions

How often should a young puppy eat?

Small, regular meals suit young puppies best. Keep the number of meals your puppy is used to at first, and ask your vet when to reduce them as the puppy grows.

When can my puppy go for walks outside?

Wait until your vet confirms the vaccination course is complete. Until then, play at home or in a clean, private space where unknown dogs have not been.

How do I keep a puppy cool in Karachi’s summer?

Walk early or late, keep water and shade available all day, test the ground with your hand, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
